It really amuses me how the APA, and others, think that removing the word ‘disorder’ actually changes anything significant in the system that is trans* pathologization. This ‘new diagnosis’ doesn’t increase access to health care or promote societal recognition outside of normative constructs. All it does is switch some labels around and make us a little less “sick” but by no means any more socially accepted.
I’m too irritated at the face of transphobia for any real commentary here. Yeah, Chaz needs a lot of growth and corrections for his own behavior, that said, it doesn’t mean he isn’t one of us and should be treated with respect. Plus, WTF dance lovers? Don’t you fuckers know us trans folk are amazing dancers?
“Released summary findings from the first phase of our ongoing Needs Assessment Project, which found that transgender, transsexual, and gender non-conforming people in the District of Columbia – regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status – have serious concerns about their safety as they go about their everyday lives. Other findings include severe underemployment, and major difficulties accessing adequate healthcare.”
“In an interview with Rolling Stone late last month, Katy Perry is again quoted using transphobic language and promoting uneducated, transphobic mentalities. If we are supporting people like Katy Perry, we are not supporting trans* people. What is driving our communities to continue to support someone who does not support us?”
This is fantastic. Talks a lot about cultural concepts of trans sexual desirableness.
A collection of “nonpliments” commonly faced by trans people. Trigger warning, some of them are very offensive but the video is quite entertaining.

Updates on and continuing the conversation about the recent attack on a woman in a Baltimore Mcdonalds, and whether her being trans had something to do with it.
Really, Saturday Night Live? and Lady Gaga mega fail… again.
“Am I the only one who thinks that a bunch of non-trans people dressing up like trans folk (even in jest) is a type of appropriation that should be equally as rebuked as other equally oppressive appropriations? …Maybe its me, but recently there seems to be a larger surge of media trans-fuck-ups than usual…. More…”
“If it isn’t clear to you that the pop tart singer Ke$ha is not walking the walk of being a trans ally, then peep this lyric from her latest song ‘Grow A Pear’
You should know
That I love you alone
But I just can’t date a dude with a vag”

What do Mary Daly, Margaret Sanger, Nellie McClung, Martha Griffiths, Gloria Steinem, Geraldine Ferraro, Julie Bendel, Robin Morgan, Germaine Greer, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Janice Raymond, Sheila Jeffreys, and Beth Elliott have in common?
You were going to tell me they’re feminist icons, weren’t you? Awww, how cute.
That’s actually the wrong answer.
All of these ‘leading lights’ of the feminist movement are contributors to a long and not very proud history of dragging -isms into the feminist movement. Racism. Ableism. Transmisogyny and transphobia. Classism. In celebrating the undoubted contributions of these women to rights for nondisabled, white, cis women, people conveniently erase their more problematic contributions to feminist thought and ideology.
Great read.
